GrindingHub NEWS 5/5: The SCHNEEBERGER Aries NGP grinds and mills ceramic dental implants
With its compact footprint and fast automated loading, the Aries NGP 5-axis grinding machine is ideally suited for the production of small parts and tools. In the application shown, high-performance ceramics are not only ground but also milled in a single setup
The ceramic implant is clamped between an adjustable W20 chuck and a pneumatic tailstock. Two diamond grinding wheels are used: a 1A1 wheel for grinding the cone and a profile wheel for grinding the thread. A special feature is the production of the groove using a solid-diamond milling cutter. This is mounted centrally on the grinding wheel flange in an ER collet. The Scara robot loads in 8 seconds and, with four pallets, has sufficient autonomy for unmanned series production.
In numerous medical applications, particularly in the field of implants, there is a growing trend toward the use of ceramics. Zirconia causes fewer allergic reactions than surgical steel and titanium. In addition, ceramics bond more effectively with bone tissue. The most efficient way to machine ceramics is with 5-axis grinding machines, preferably from SCHNEEBERGER.
